Understanding Autism
I want to learn about autism
Via free, online resources
Where should I go?
Great question! the answer is…
#ActuallyAutistic Bloggers
When you read blogs by people who are autistic, you are learning about autism from people who have first hand experience, rather than learning about what neurotypical people think it is like to be autistic.

#ActuallyAutistic artists, researchers, creators, &
non-speaking writers
This should include non-speaking autistic people, who are autistic people who do not ever, or do not primarily, communicate verbally. They are a valued and important part of the autistic community’s voice.

I want to read scientific research about autism.
Awesome! Google scholar will help you to find papers.
Remember to think critically about autism research conducted by non-autistic (allistic) researchers.
Here are some good questions to ask:
– what is their goal? are they looking to “cure” autism? (most autistic people reject the idea of a “cure”)
– did they involve the perspectives of autistic people in their research?
– are they framing autism as a deficit or a difference?

I want to read research about autism, but I don’t understand the technical language.
That’s okay, it’s super complex!
